5 Coaching Tips For New Managers

It can be difficult for new managers to lead an unfamiliar team as both manager and team are unfamiliar with each other’s skills and abilities. Still, to become successful, these hurdles must be overcome, and effective coaching practices must take over.

Consistent, effective coaching methods can help with employee onboarding and retention, performance improvement, skill improvement, and knowledge transfer. In fact, coaching is central to improving the performance of the entire team.

With that in mind, we are going to take a look at some coaching tips for new managers which can help them, and their team, become successful:

Ask Good Questions- it is often said that great questions lead to great answers, and great answers lead to great conversations. Managers should develop strong relationships with their employees which will help them determine if their employees have a positive attitude and have the capacity to perform and improve.

Take A Positive Approach- regardless of the situation, good managers remain positive. This is especially important for new managers as their team is looking up to them for support and will take their lead, regardless of what that lead is.

Listen And Empower- a good manager doesn’t just talk all of the time, but they listen as well. Coaching requires both encouragement and empowerment, and by listening to your employees’ input, questions, and feedback, you can build one-on-one relationships that result in improved performance.

Know How To Guide Conversations- sometimes, conversations can go astray with people getting off topic, upset, or just taking more time to get to the point than what’s allowed. Communication skills and emotional intelligence are key to guiding a conversation towards a more positive outcome. Managers can guide conversations by asking questions and listening, instead of just giving directives.

Commit To Continuous Learning- by making a commitment to improve your own skills and competencies, you will be able to lead by example and your team will follow. You should show that you are interested in their success and ask questions about where they see their career going, or how they see their role evolving in the company. Be sure to show your employees that you are actively interested in their career, accomplishments, and professional success.
